THE EERO SAARINEN COLLECTION

Given the distinguished family and privileged education in which Eero Saarinen was raised, it is of little surprise that he became such a celebrated international architect and designer. Before immigrating to the United States from Finland at the age of thirteen, he enjoyed an adolescence that few ever know. Due to his father's influence and stature in his native country, young Eero was able to listen with curiosity to conversations of music, art and literate from Mahler, Sibelius, Gorky and countless others who visited his parent's enlightened home. Of this experience, Eero later observed, "I was a very lucky little boy. My father had his architectural studio right in his house. The whole family would sit at one end of the studio. As a child, I would always draw and I happened to be good at it. Therefore I got more attention from drawing than anything else. That made me draw more and more ... I was only praised if what I did was good, not the way children are praised today for anything they do."

By the time his father had settled his family at Cranbrook and began designing the educational complex, Eero's talents had progressed so considerably and demonstrated such promise that, at age nineteen, he was called upon to design the furnishings for the Kingswood School for girls. This auspicious debut was to portend the younger Saarinen's talent as an original architect and designer.

The numerous painted wood furniture designs from Kingswood, while not unique in material are certainly unique in their graceful form. Although the designs are rooted in tradition with their four tapered legs and crest rail motifs, they use a varied color palette. His Kingswood furnishings represent the young Saarinen's initiation into the world of design. The fact that they are still structurally sound, comfortable and visually fresh is a testament of the timeless appeal of Eero Saarinen's imagination. Here, with this quiet collection of furniture for a private school in the midwest was Saarinen's beginning of later frame and fortune as an architect of such admired projects as the Dulles International Airport and CBS Headquarters in New York City, and as a designer of such innovative furniture as the Pedestal and Womb chairs for Knoll International.
